Literacy is not a luxury, it is a right and a responsibility. If our world is to meet the challenges of the twenty-first century we must harness the energy and creativity of all our citizens. - President Clinton on International Literacy Day, September 8th 1994

Our Mission

Coordination and careful planning of literacy programs is imperative and must be adopted and maintained for the long term. Our students’ academic success is dependent on the guidance and collaboration of our Principal, Team of dedicated Teachers, the Librarian, the school's Technical Support Team, the support of Parents and the surrounding Community and of course the ability of our Students. This implementation takes time and dedication.  Once it takes hold and is effective, the literacy success of our students will only improve to build them successful futures.

As the Principal of this school, in order to promote  our "Reading is Succeeding Literacy Plan", the Principal is essential for their leadership-role and they are also an integral part of our literacy team, as they will be required to participate in:

1. Providing financial support that will allow students and teachers access to a wide selection of books for both classroom and school libraries

2.  Supporting teachers as they develop their methodologies for improving literacy skills

3.  Curriculum building that focuses on implementing a school-wide approach to improving literacy

4.  Assessments that reflect the implemented school-wide approach to improving literacy

5.  Understanding the balance between learning to read and reading to learn

6.  Providing classroom teachers with, and participate in professional development (as a team)

7.  Developing a school culture of "Loving Literature" that supports and encourages teacher and student engagement in fun literacy activities

8.  Encouraging and supporting teachers in developing seasonal and themed literacy plans

9.  Keeping an open communication channel with stakeholders (parents and the community)

10. Leading with a vision that integrates literacy and technology

11. Providing a technology team to our staff, teachers and students with full support
